5 Reasons to straighten your teeth

Have you got crooked teeth and you are not happy with your smile?

Apart from the aesthetic implications, there are at least 5 other important aspects linked to crooked teeth and there are as many reasons to consider adult orthodontics.

1. Dental plaque grows faster, making teeth difficult to clean. Patients with crooked teeth have to work harder to clean their teeth and are prone to get stained teeth and tartar easily.

2. Crooked teeth are prone to develop gum disease. Excessive, faster accumulations of plaque and tartar make teeth prone to develop gum disease with gum receding, bone loss, tooth mobility and, towards late stages, tooth loss. Due to the bone loss as a result of gum disease, the patients are left with insufficient bone for implant treatment.

3. Bad breath. Abundant accumulations of germs in the mouth could make patients prone to have bad breath. Certain cosmetic products like mouthwashes or “fresh breath” sprays could improve the issue for a limited amount of time but a real solution is to straighten the crooked teeth in order to avoid bacterial accumulation.

4. Psychological effects. Patients with crooked teeth tend to smile less, increasing anxiety, stress and frustration. They tend to socialize less and less happy people. Those having teeth well aligned smile more and exhibit more self-confidence.

5. Uneven wear of the teeth. Crooked teeth offer partial, unnatural contact with opposing teeth resulting in excessive uneven wear of the enamel that could increase the risk of sensitivity, tooth decay and tooth fracture. Indeed, this is not something that happens in the short but in long term, however, the consequences are difficult to anticipate and expensive to treat.

Adult orthodontics treatment is a way of straightening teeth, to improve their appearance and avoid the risks mentioned above. It will therefore help to look after the long-term health of your teeth, gums and jaw joints, by spreading the biting pressure over all your teeth, while also making them easier to clean.
