What you need to know about crooked teeth and teeth straightened treatment

1. When is best to start the treatment?

The best time for orthodontic treatment is during childhood, however, adults can benefit from this type of treatment also. Adult orthodontics is available at any age.

2. What should I do if I want to straighten my teeth up?

Contact us to book an initial consultation. It is very important to start the orthodontic treatment with a full examination. This will usually involve checking your teeth, some X-rays and a digital impression in order to construct models of your teeth. This is a stress-free appointment and you will have to opportunity to ask any questions you may have.

3. Which treatment is right for me?

There are plenty of systems and possibilities of treatments, but when you come to see us, we will discuss what treatment is suitable for you. Once you are sure you want to go ahead, the treatment can start at your earliest convenience.

In the past, we use to extract healthy natural teeth to make room for the remaining ones in order to realign them. If you do not have enough room for all your permanent teeth, space can be made using other forms of treatment without having any teeth out. We can gently, with patience and different types of dental appliances, develop dental arches to achieve a beautiful, healthy smile.

4. What appliances are you using in your practice?

In our practice, we use all types of appliances like mobile appliances, fixed braces and clear aligners (invisible braces).

Fixed braces are not always made of metal, but plastic or ceramic, being almost invisible.

Clear aligners are tough, plastic trays that are used to straighten teeth. Several sets are made for each patient. Being nearly invisible, it means that no one would know that you are straightening your teeth.

When treatment is finished the teeth need to be held in the achieved position. Your teeth will be kept in that position with retainers, fixed and removable, to make sure your teeth won't move back in the initial position.

5. Is it likely that my teeth are going to move again?

Even if it is unusual for teeth to change their position in order to require more treatment, minor movements could happen throughout life.

6. What should I do after the adult orthodontic treatment is finished?

A thorough maintenance programme after finishing the treatment is important and the dentist and hygienist's regular visits contributing to the long-term success of the treatment.

A very good device to help you keep your teeth clean is the Waterpik.
